The role of a parent is very complex due in large part to the fact
that there is not a school or education system which one can attend in
order to become a model parent.
We feel that with guidance, a parent can play a very beneficial role in the development
of a skater. Being a positive person some qualities we feel to be of the utmost
importance are the following:
- Love your child for what he/she is.
- Be realistic about their ability.
- Be realistic about their strong and weak areas.
- Don't live desires through your child.
- Understand that their skating career will have peaks and valleys.
- To fail a test does not mean the child is a failure.
- Measure success by their development as a person, not as a skater.
- Communicate with the coach. Make sure you ask questions and understand
the total involvement and commitment.
- Be a person your child can be proud of.
- In consultation with your child and your coaching staff, set realistic
goals.
- Understand that Rink Gossip can only be harmful to you, your child, and
your coaching staff.
- Be supportive of your Training Centre and their team.
- Offer help in weak areas, rather than criticize.
Towards the end of his long and productive life a wise man once asked what
advice he had for young men just starting out on life's journey. This was his
answer:
Belong to something bigger than yourself
Work with others towards a common goal
Do your part
Take pride in doing your job well
Work hard to make your ideas take shape in reality
Help build something of lasting value.
A definition of success could be:
The power with which to acquire whatever one demands of life without
violating the rights of others.
