Giving Opportunities for Athletes to Learn

Giving Opportunities for athletes to learn is a non-profit organization that devotes all its resources to the advancement of both the formal and informal education of Canadian athletes training in the Waterloo Region. The overall intent of this organization is to assist elite athletes and their sport bodies by providing services that ensure quality education by removing barriers that prevent athletes from reaching their full potential.

Giving Opportunities for Athletes to Learn (GOALS) provides an educational support program for dedicated athletes training in the Waterloo Region. Flexible educational opportunities are provided to elite athletes who need to balance their training and schooling needs. The GOALS program operates out of Jacob Hespeler Secondary School and Hespeler Public School in Cambridge. Currently, Provincial, National and International skaters with the Kerry Leitch Figure Skating Schools (KLFSS) are participating in the GOALS program. As the program becomes more established, other sport bodies and their elite athletes will become involved with GOALS.

SERVICE PROVIDED BY THE GOALS PROGRAM

The GOALS program has been established to ensure the opportunity for a quality education for athlete students training in Waterloo Region by way of the following:
  1. To establish an educational bursary program that provides funds for deserving athlete students to assist them with education costs as many athlete students must live away from home in order to train at a National Training Centre.
  2. To ensure that athlete students have opportunities to receive quality, formal education while training long and intense hours to compete at the Provincial, National and International levels.
  3. To assist both athlete students and the academic institutions that they attend in co-ordinating educational programs to accommodate the training schedule of the athlete students and the resources at the school.
  4. Where necessary to facilitate and support athlete students taking independent courses.
  5. To provide opportunities for tutorial support for athlete students.
  6. To enhance the athletes' informal education by way of seminars, guest speakers.
  7. To establish alumni associations of former athletes in order to provide a vehicle for former athletes to continue to support one another, their sport and developing athletes.
