Champions Training Centre offers many off ice classes which are designed to
improve their skating skills. These classes enable the skater to
learn and perfect their technique without using valuable and expensive
ice time. The classes consist of the following:
Twister Class:
The twister class is designed to improve balance and train rotation so as to
better prepare them to rotate difficult double and triple jumps. The skaters train
on a metal twister which they practice different rotating positions as well as
jump take-offs. The class is invaluable as it stimulates the rotation required on
the ice and clearly points out the areas where the skaters have problems. The
metal twister is better to use than the plastic model as it remains stationary
when the skater is rotating on it while the plastic model travels. Thus, the
skaters do not realize they are not rotating in a balanced position. This class
greatly speeds up the learning process in order to help skaters achieve difficult
jumps earlier in their career.
Jump Class:
The jump class is designed to improve the skaters' vertical jumping ability as
well as simulate jump take-offs incorporating the balance and rotation learned in
the twister class. This class trains the muscle memory system by focusing in on
the arms, legs, feet, and upper body during rotation in the air. Skaters spend a
great deal of time training each body part so that like a computer, the body will
respond immediately to the mental message it receives while on the ice performing.
This class provides the skater with improved vertical jumping thus enabling them
to incorporate the rotational skills they acquired in the twister class to greatly
improve their on ice jumps.
Technique Class:
This class is designed to teach the skater their jump and spin technique without
using expensive ice time. The skater learns the Champions Training Centre
prescribed technique and then the on ice coaching staff designs the technique to
be specific to each skater. Due to body shape, coordination and individual
learning skills each skater will apply the technique learned to best suit their
needs. We refer to this process as shopping in order to pick up the ingredients
(techniques) that will best work for you and your body. Technique is very
individualized and should be very specific to the skater.
Lecture Classes:
This class is to expose the skaters to the many areas that are so important to
their skating careers. Class material consists of some of the following:
- public speaking
- being interviewed on TV, radio or by the press
- manners and proper etiquette
- calculating competition results (ordinals)
- nutrition
- conditioning
- life after skating
- equipment and skate sharpening
- sports psychology
- competition preparation
- costume designing
- music training
- music recording
- injuries and prevention
- proper position to stand on podium
- understanding refrigeration equipment
Yoga Classes:
The focus of this class is relaxation, allowing participants to benefit in stress
reduction and increased flexibility of the mind and the body. Breath is life
energy (prana) and will be emphasized throughout the class.
Ballroom Dancing Classes:
In the summer we offered Off Ice Ballroom Dancing Classes. This class
gave the skaters an opportunity to learn and express different types of
dance such as: Waltz, Swing, Salsa, Rumba, etc.
Hip Hop Classes:
This class also offered in the summer allows the skaters to be creative
through Hip Hop music, It offers a different type of movement and timing
which will assist the skaters on the ice.
Fitness Classes:
We offer a wide variety in our fitness classes that keep the athletes motivated,
challenged, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable of their sport. Each class is moulded
to fit the level, age and ability of the athlete.
The conditioning classes are divided into four specific work groups:
- Aerobic
This area is particularly important during the spring session. It focuses on
improving cardiovascular endurance and strength of the athlete. Many different
exercises are used to achieve these goals with a strong focus on variety.
- Anaerobic
This class focuses on the improvement of power through short intense workouts
using a work/rest ratio to achieve the best possible result. Technique, alignment
and posture are priorities in this class.
- Muscular
This involves the isolation of specific muscle groups and incorporates a variety
of exercises to build a stronger athletic body. Weights, free weights, bands
and resistance are some of the methods applied to achieve these goals.
- Flexibility
The aim is to improve the athletes overall stretching ability and line on the ice.
It is also a key element in preventing injuries. Classes are maintained throughout
the year.
Weight & Nutrition
Champions Training Centre uses the Fuel computer program to develop nutrition and
control ideal body weight. Skaters are weighed on a weekly basis and have monthly
% body fat tests. These measurements allow the skater to work toward achieving the
body shape of their choice. We offer a complete medical staff to provide the
skater with the best nutritional information possible. |
